Thinking Like an Analyst - Maven Analytics

Yay I finally got my Maven Analytics subscription! Expect that to be where most of my Learning Logs come from for the foreseeable future.

Today I finished the “Thinking like an Analyst” course, which I had started during their Open Campus event.

I love the reminders to take a step back and make sure you are thinking like the business owner, to consider your audience, and to tell a story.

Trying to explain how to consider your audience was one of the more frustrating things to try and teach at the middle school level. I guess I find it kind of validating that here I am, in the midst of a career transition, and seeing that what I was teaching is truly a part of the world.

Do I feel like I necessarily NEED to complete the recommended courses? Not really, especially since I’ve already got a fairly good grip on Excel and SQL. However, I like having a way to keep them in the top of my mind. The structure of the courses is also excellent for keeping focused (at least for me). Also, Maven Analytics is great at explaining the “why” behind certain things, or mentioning a tip that I didn’t know before.
