Furthering Knowledge of QGIS

I've spent the last few days extending my knowledge of how to use QGIS.

I like to think that in the 7 months I've been using it, I've become pretty proficient. I know better than to think I know it all, however.

So, I have been accessing Alasdair Rae's Map Academy (course 1, course 2) on Udemy and learning some neat tips and tricks. I found this course extremely accessible and easily navigable, with clear lesson titles and logical organization. Aly provides the files to follow along, and I think this course could be great for anyone just getting started with QGIS. It's worth checking with your public library to see if access to Udemy is one of their resources!

So what kind of things did I learn?

  • You can drag and drop colors from one box to another in the styling options.

  • The CRS The_World_From_Space exists, and it is a globe.

  • Typing "world" in the coordinates area gives you a layer of the countries around the world.

  • More about using Raster files and tiles than I previously knew, but I will definitely have to play with them to actually understand.

  • Adding a second map to a map layout for printing/saving as an image.

  • A much wider use of expressions is available in QGIS than I realized, and I'm looking forward to being able to play with these as time goes on, including in the labeling and symbology options.

I still have a few sections left, so I'm sure the list will get longer!
