Coffee Shop Sales Dashboard

It felt really good to get that LEGO dashboard completed, so today I wanted to do one of the guided projects that Maven Analytics offers.

The way I went about this was to read the scenario brief, download the data, and see what I could see for myself.

There were several steps I knew to take, such as double checking the numerical formats and exploring the data.

Once I felt like I was ready for the next step, I read the hints and watched the solution video to make sure I was correct so far. I mostly was, with the exception of the calculated revenue field.

The second objective was to use pivot tables to look for trends in the data. I did what I thought I should, then read the hints. I had done WAY too much in the pivot table department. Too much information in a single pivot--the solutions contained the same information I had included, just separated out.

The third objective was to create the dashboard. Again, I did what I thought was ideal, then read the hints and watched the solutions. I mostly had what was suggested, and I have more slicers that I did not remove because I think they're handy.

So, what I learned in this process was to KISS - keep it simple stupid. I way over-analyzed and complicated what was a simple dashboard. I learned not to be afraid of simple pivots and charts. To not forget that the information provided might be able to be calculated for more ideal information.
